The psychologists at Achievements provide a variety of services to children and their families.  Psychologists work as part of multidisciplinary teams to conduct comprehensive psychological and psychoeducational assessments for the purpose of obtaining baseline levels of global development, to rule out learning disorders, behavior disorders and developmental disorders, to identify strengths and areas in need of growth, and to determine the level of progress made over time.  Our psychologists provide evaluations for Early Intervention Programs and a number of local school districts to determine if a child meets the criteria for service eligibility; in doing so, a child may receive services such as special education, counseling, and referrals for additional testing in an effort to facilitate growth in all developmental domains.  We work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children.  Finally, psychologists are available to consult with educators and other service providers at our toddler groups, self-contained classrooms, and integrated classrooms.

Play Therapy

During play therapy, a certified school psychologist or social worker targets emotions, feelings, and thoughts that children may find difficult to identify and express.  Such feelings may derive from the child’s environment, internal reasons, or a culmination of both factors.  The child takes an active role in choosing and participating in play, using a variety of toys and materials.  Play therapy utilizes a combination of both structured and unstructured activities, including drawing, painting, pictures, literature, games, and free play, such as with a dollhouse or figurines.  The primary goal is to encourage communication about feelings in order to promote more positive social-emotional functioning and success in everyday activities.  Play therapy may be administered in both individual or small group settings.
